PERSONAL PROTECTION EQUIPMENT (PPE):
Helicopters offer us a very unique, and powerful tool for technical rescue. The trade-off is the inherent dangers that are associated with personnel working in close proximity to helicopters.
Fire almost always accompanies a helicopter crash, nomex jumpsuits offer substantial burn protection to crewmembers, passengers, as well as ground personnel. Helmets and goggles will allow protection from “flying” objects at the landing zones. Steel toe boots offer protection from the landing skids. Approved hiking boots (5-10 soles) are recommended for rescue members who will fly to mountain locations.
All Fire personnel and crew members should wear the following PPE when operating in or around helicopters.
Flight Helmet: Must provide protection for the head. Exceptions: TRT helmets or helicopter head sets may be used when a flight helmet is not necessary. (Flight helmets must be worn during long line operations).
Goggles: Must provide eye protection from flying objects due to the rotor-wash of the helicopter.
Fire Resistant Clothing: Nomex jumpsuit with length sufficient to eliminate exposure between boots and gloves.
Leather Steel Toe Boots: Should extend above ankle. Exception: Working in an environment not conducive to wearing leather boots, i.e. hiking boots (TRT issue, 5-10 soles)
Gloves: Should be leather, or nomex and leather.
